The 1979 chart was, to some degree, a reshuffling of the previous year’s chart and must have given Peel concerns that an all-time chart would be repetitive and would need tweaking to be a long term feature. That said, there were 23 new chart entries with a decent number from the new wave genre to compliment the old punk standards.
The breakthrough of the Jam was represented by 4 entries including “Down In The Tube Station” at number 4, as the old guard from 1976 said their final chart goodbyes.
